Veeam Backup & Replication: Licensing, Pricing, Download and Upgrade Guide

7 Mins read
Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam Backup & Replication is licensed mainly per protected workload through the Veeam Universal License (VUL), sold as part of Veeam Data Platform editions. Legacy socket-based licences are still supported for existing customers.

In India, pricing is quote-based through Veeam partners such as ZNetLive and depends on your workload count, edition and subscription term, with 18% GST added. The latest version is Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.1.18, released on 12 August 2026.

This guide covers the architecture, licensing, pricing, and how to download and upgrade safely.

What is Veeam Backup & Replication?

Veeam Backup & Replication is data protection software that backs up, replicates and recovers workloads across virtual, physical and cloud environments from one console. It is the core product of Veeam Data Platform. Organizations use Veeam Backup & Replication software to:

  • Back up and restore virtual machines, physical servers and cloud workloads
  • Replicate critical systems for disaster recovery
  • Recover from accidental deletion, hardware failure or ransomware
  • Keep immutable backup copies that attackers cannot alter or delete

For a closer look at its features, check out our Veeam guide.

What about Microsoft 365? Veeam Backup & Replication does not protect Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive or Teams. That needs Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, a separate product with its own licence. Learn more about Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

Veeam Backup & Replication Architecture

Veeam uses a modular architecture: a central backup server coordinates components that move and store data, so the setup scales from one site to many.

Component What it does
Backup server  The control centre. Run core services, schedules jobs and stores settings in a PostgreSQL configuration database.
Console and Web UI  Where administrators create jobs, run restores, and monitor activity.
Backup proxy  Reads data from the source and sends it to the repository. Add proxies to speed up backups.
Backup repository  Stores backup files on a Windows or Linux server, a hardened Linux repository with immutability, a NAS, a deduplicating appliance or object storage.
Scale-out backup repository  Pools several repositories, with optional capacity and archive tiers in object storage.
WAN accelerator  Reduces bandwidth when sending backups to remote sites.
Enterprise Manager  Optional web portal for managing several backup servers and self-service restores.

 Deployment Options in Version 13

Version 13 gives you two ways to deploy the backup server:

  • Windows Installation: The traditional approach, installed on a Windows server.
  • Veeam Software Appliance: A ready-made Linux-based appliance with a hardened operating system, deployed from an ISO, OVA or VHDX file and updated from within the appliance.

Small environments can run all components on one server. Larger ones place proxies close to the workloads and keep at least one repository on separate, hardened storage, so a compromised network cannot reach every backup copy.

How Veeam Backup & Replication Licensing Works

Veeam offers two licensing models, and the edition you choose decides which capabilities you get.

  • Veeam Universal License (per instance)

With VUL, you license the workloads you protect, not the hardware. A virtual machine or physical server uses one instance; other workloads, such as workstations or file shares, consume instances as defined in Veeam’s licensing policy. Licences are portable, so you can move workloads between VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix, physical servers and public clouds without buying new ones.

  • Socket-based Licensing (legacy)

Socket licences are tied to the CPU sockets of protected hypervisor hosts. Existing holders can renew, and Veeam provides a migration path to VUL.

  • Veeam Data Platform Editions

Veeam Backup & Replication is sold as part of Veeam Data Platform, which comes in four editions:

Edition  What it includes  Best for
Essentials  The same capabilities as Advanced, sold in 5-instance packs and capped at 50 workloads  Small businesses with fewer than 50 workloads
Foundation  Veeam Backup & Replication for backup and recovery  Organizations that need core data protection
Advanced  Foundation plus Veeam ONE for monitoring, analytics and threat insights  Teams that need visibility across their backup environment
Premium  Advanced plus Veeam Recovery Orchestrator for automated, tested disaster recovery  Organizations with strict recovery and compliance requirements

Ransomware recovery warranty: Veeam Cyber Secure, a paid services program sold separately, includes in its Premium tier a ransomware recovery warranty of up to US$5 million for verified incidents, plus Coveware-led incident response. Eligibility conditions apply.

  • Free Option: Community Edition

Community Edition is free for up to 10 workloads, with community support and some features unavailable. It lets you evaluate Veeam with no commitment. When you outgrow it, installing a paid licence on the same server keeps your existing jobs and configuration.

Veeam Backup & Replication Pricing in India

Veeam does not publish INR list prices, so pricing is quote-based through authorized partners, with 18% GST on software licences. Your cost depends on:

  • Number of workloads: each protected VM, server or other workload consumes instances
  • Edition: Advanced and Premium cost more than Foundation
  • Subscription term: multi-year subscriptions usually lower the yearly cost
  • Licence model: VUL subscriptions and legacy socket renewals are priced differently

Minimum Purchase: Essentials are sold in 5-instance packs (maximum 50). Foundation, Advanced and Premium have a minimum of 10 instances.

Managed Service Providers: Through the Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) program, MSPs rent licences monthly based on usage instead of buying subscriptions upfront. ZNetLive can help set up VCSP licensing.

Getting a Quote: Note how many VMs, physical servers and how much file or NAS data you need to protect, plus your preferred edition and term. Request a Veeam quote from ZNetLive and our team will size and price it in INR.

How to Download Veeam Backup & Replication

Always download from Veeam’s official portal or an authorized partner, never from third-party sites.

  1. Go to Veeam’s download page and sign in or verify your email address.
  2. Choose your deployment type: The Windows ISO for Windows installs and upgrades, or the Veeam Software Appliance (ISO, OVA or VHDX) for a new Linux-based deployment.
  3. Unblock the ISO on Windows in the file’s properties before running setup, or the installer will stop with a security warning.
  4. Check system requirements in the release notes.
  5. Apply a licence: Your production licence, an evaluation licence, or none to run as Community Edition.

Which Build Should You Download?

Most organizations need the latest build, but one scenario calls for an earlier one:

Build  Released  Download it if
13.1.1.18  12 August 2026  You are deploying new or upgrading from 12.3.1, 12.3.2, 13.0 or 13.1.
13.0.3.63  25 August 2026  You plan to migrate a Windows deployment to the Veeam Software Appliance, supported only on 13.0.x builds.

See Veeam KB4738 for download links and release notes for every build.

How to Update or Upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication

An update applies to a patch within a version, such as 13.1 to 13.1.1. An upgrade moves to a new version, such as 12.3 to 13.1. Both matter for security, since Veeam regularly patches vulnerabilities, including critical issues fixed in version 13 builds during 2026.

1. Supported Upgrade Paths to 13.1.1

The right upgrade method depends on the version you run today:

Your current version  What to do
13.1 (build 13.1.0.411)  Apply the 13.1.1 patch. It works only on this build.
13.0, 12.3.1 or 12.3.2  Upgrade directly with the full 13.1.1 ISO.
Older than 12.3.1  Upgrade in steps to a supported version first.
Veeam Software Appliance  Update from within the appliance, not with the Windows ISO.

Moving from Windows to the appliance? Veeam supports this migration only on 13.0.x builds, so stay on 13.0.2 or 13.0.3 until it is complete.

2. Pre-upgrade Checklist

Complete these checks before you start, so you can roll back if something goes wrong:

  • Confirm your current build (Main Menu > Help > About)
  • Read the release notes and check hypervisor, OS and plug-in compatibility
  • Confirm your licence covers the target version
  • Run a configuration backup
  • Finish or pause running jobs
  • Schedule a maintenance window, since a reboot may be required

3. Upgrade Order

Upgrade components in this sequence to avoid version conflicts:

  • Update Enterprise Manager first, if you use it.
  • Run the installer or patch on the backup server. Setup runs pre-upgrade checks and preserves existing jobs and settings.
  • Let the console update proxies, repositories, and other components.

Afterwards, confirm that jobs run, components are connected, licence status is correct, and a test restore succeeds.

Veeam Backup & Replication Best Practices

Here are 6 practices every Veeam deployment should follow from day one:

  1. Follow the 3-2-1-1-0 rule: Three copies, two media types, one offsite, one immutable or offline, zero errors after verification.
  2. Make backups immutable with a hardened Linux repository or immutable object storage.
  3. Separate backup credentials from domain administrator accounts and enable multi-factor authentication.
  4. Test recovery regularly and record the results.
  5. Keep Veeam patched, since backup servers are a common attack target.
  6. Monitor backup health, including failed jobs, capacity, and unusual changes in backup size.

Real-world Example: Mahindra Group

Mahindra Group cut the cost of its backup activities by 55% after replacing tools from several vendors with Veeam Backup & Replication, which now protects more than 1,000 virtual machines along with physical infrastructure. Read the Veeam customer story. The lesson: simplifying infrastructure can save more than a lower licence price.
