User CALs
With the User CAL, you can purchase a CAL (Client Access License) for each user to access and use services like stored files, images, or other resources from multiple devices remotely.
Device CALs
With the Device CAL, you can purchase a CAL (Client Access License) for each device that accesses your server and allow multiple users to use that device to access the server.
CAL Requirements
Each user using a licensed Windows Server Standard, Datacenter, or Multipoint edition requires a Windows Server CAL or an RDS CAL in addition to Windows Server.
Accessing the Server
When you have a Windows Server CAL, you can use any edition of Windows Server that is from the same or a previous version.
Licensing Model
The Windows Server 2022 licensing model includes both Cores and Client Access Licenses (CALs).
