Which cloud services can solve my scalability issues?

4 Mins read

“Every kid coming out of Harvard, every kid coming out of school now thinks he can be the next Mark Zuckerberg, and with these new technologies like cloud computing, he actually has a shot.” – Marc Andreessen, Board Member of Facebook.

The cloud computing holds a potential that is strong enough to change the business scenarios around the world, making way for new industries and many innovations. What cloud service providers are offering with their multiple cloud-based products, is not merely a new technology, but a solution to the modern business needs, reduced time to market and scalability.

The modern businesses require a wholesome solution that is able to help them meet their customer demands, provide them with strong computing resources at minimum cost, but is still able to help them maximize their ROI.

IBM identifies some key features of cloud that makes it a lucrative option for businesses as their IT solution. One of the key business enablers here is “scalability.”

What is scalability? Why is it important for your business? And which cloud service can solve your business scalability concern? These are some of the things that we will unfold in the coming sections.

Understanding scalability and its importance for your business.

“Scalability is a characteristic of a system, model or function that describes its capability to cope and perform under an increased or expanding workload. A system that scales well will be able to maintain or even increase its level of performance or efficiency when tested by larger operational demands.” – Investopedia.

Online subscription-based companies like Netflix or Spotify have millions of subscribers and have to meet their demands during peak times. Netflix, in order to meet its high customer demands, took a decision to move its operations from a traditional data center to a cloud environment.

Think about e-commerce companies like Amazon or Flipkart. Festival time for them means increased website traffic and high bandwidth requirement. For them, cloud is a perfect solution to their scalability concerns. It allows quick provisioning of resources, helping organizations achieve economies of scale without investing on expanding their large computing infrastructure. Cloud scalability can be achieved at different levels of cloud services depending upon the needs of an organization.

Level of scalability

1. Server Scalability

Server scalability in the cloud can be understood with the different scalability levels it offers through its private, public and hybrid models.

Public cloud: Public cloud comes as the most economical cloud deployment model. Working on a shared platform, public cloud hosting offers limited computing features on a virtual platform, with multiple users. Especially for startups, public cloud is the most cost effective way of getting into the cloud computing phase. Public cloud offers pay-as-you-go scalability of resources. Thus, you can easily scale up and down depending on your website traffic.

Private cloud: For higher security and isolated environments, companies prefer private cloud deployment model. A private cloud hosting gives security to company’s data and information with storage and backup facilities. Scalability in private cloud is a longer process as compared to a public cloud. Here, due to being isolated, limited resources’ scalability would mean additional hardware investment.

Hybrid cloud: Hybrid cloud model gives you the benefits of both public and private clouds. To store your confidential data and information, you can choose a private cloud, while, for non-confidential operations, you can opt for the public cloud. Companies who follow the hybrid model of cloud deployment generally shift their operative data part to the cloud, while maintaining data and information on-premise.

2. Network Scalability

The resources in the cloud are made available through a virtualized platform. Networking on them is done either by TCP/IP or Ethernet virtualization and overlay networks. Datacenters running several VMs per server need to scale the network from time to time and this is accomplished by over-provisioning the resources for meeting the increase in demands.

3. Platform Scalability

PaaS: Platform as a service or PaaS based cloud solutions can be used for application development and it provides the basic framework to help developers customize applications easily. It makes application development, testing and deployment of operations quick and cost-effective. PaaS solutions based upon an open architecture provide the needed extensibility for building modern enterprise platforms.

IaaS: Infrastructure as a service gives a new scalable way to the organizations to help them manage all their infrastructure needs like computing (bare metal or virtualized), networking, storage and networking services. Instead of making upfront investments in hardware, organizations can purchase any IaaS, where the resources are provisioned on an on-demand utility model.

SaaS: Software as a service uses the web to serve a third party application, whose interface can be accessed by the customer easily. What makes it a viable option for many is its scalability. Eventually when your business grows, you can add more SaaS users by just adding more software licenses.

So, which cloud services can solve my scalability issues?

Cloud is a pool of vast computing resources, made available to you through a virtualized platform. It offers multiple scalability solutions depending upon your organization’s needs. Whether it’s public, private or hybrid model of the cloud, each one is offering different levels of scalability.

Organizations can also make use of proactive and reactive scaling. In proactive scaling, the resources are scaled on fixed time-based intervals, assuming big traffic surges. Reactive scaling helps you to scale up or down during unexpected traffic rise or fall. Having a clear business idea and traffic projection will help you in choosing the right cloud platform.
